All in a Day's Work...

Only in Colorado do you get to do this as part of your job...as an ER doctor. :) A few weeks ago our third year residents had their annual class retreat, and chose as its location Sangree's Hut, one of the 10th Mountain Division Huts here in Colorado. The 10th Mountain DIvision Huts are all really fun places where you can hike to in summer, or snowshoe to in winter (or if you have AT gear, you can put skins on your skis and skin up and ski down...I want some of this stuff, but it's not really in the budget right now!!) - And stay in a fantastic, warm hut, with beds, stoves and outhouses...Sort of like the many fantastic huts we stayed in NZ!

You can see here the big stove with a huge pot on top for melting snow (no running water here!), and many places to dry your stuff. And this cozy kitchen for cooking and making warm drinks. Now, you must be thinking, you're not a third year resident any more (thank goodness!), why do you have pictures of this beautiful place if it wasn't your retreat? Well...I got to go because they had a talk about the fellowships. And being the ultrasound fellow who was free that day, I huffed in on showshoes -- 3.5 miles in, 3.5 miles out. 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Phew! It was hard work!! But snowshoeing was so fun! It's very peaceful and quiet, and everything is pretty because it's all covered in snow. It's definitely something I want to incorporate into our winter repertoire. Gorgeous views abounded. We made it up to give our talks, and join them for lunch, then made it out before dark. Luckily I had a few other attendings with me to make the journey. Pictured below is my new boss, as well as 2 other attendings. Good company for a great day.
