Going to the cabin!

A couple of weekends ago we had a long weekend, so we headed up to Ohakune to the Rowans' ski chalet. (We'd call it a ski cabin, but they all call it a ski chalet, which is clearly much fancier than a ski cabin, so ski chalet it is!) It's a cute little A-Frame, from the inside the layout is just exactly the same as the old "little cabin" in San Isabel. (Jon Rowan is the lawyer Patrick worked with here in Wanganui.) We thought we'd go skiing at Turoa, up on Ruapehu, but there was not much snow. So we went hiking, trail running, read, and played a few epic games of scrabble...It was just like being at the cabin!!

Of course, when it's cold and wet outside, one can stay cozy and warm inside with our new New Zealand favorite...mulled wine!

After a few lazy days at "the chalet," we were able to finally take a jetboat ride to the Bridge to Nowhere. Jetboats are a kiwi invention, and make for endless amounts of fun on NZ waterways. In our case it took us to the Bridge to Nowhere, built in the late 1930's by soldiers recently returned from war...It is deep in the forrest up the Whanganui River, and it turned out to be so difficult to live there that all of the settlers eventually left. But the bridge they built stood, and is now a cool destination on your trip up the Whanganui.

We made it to the bridge just in time for morning tea, and of course, our good Kiwi tour guides had a backpack with tea/coffee/hot chocolate and tasty baked goods for us. Skipping morning tea because of a jetboat tour would be uncivilized!
