Waitomo Caves with Cash

Patrick- So Cash and I went to these caves that contain glow worms. It is apparently the only place in the world like this. The insects lay larvae who glow to attract other insects and then they get tangled in this sticky web stuff and they are eaten. The ceilings of the caves are full of glowing white bulbs the size of a pencil or smaller. They don't let you take pictures so I can't actually prove that we were there. The top picture is actually from the Bay of Islands up north but somehow it made it into the download. The bottom photo is a limestone cave that does not have glow worms that you can also tour. It had some pretty amazing features though. It was discovered when a Maori man was hunting a wild boar that ran into the cave entrance and his dogs chased the pig in there. It was surprising that he went into the cave because the local Maori are scared of caves and only buried their dead in them.
On our tour of the caves there was this little kid who would not be quiet. He kept jabbering as good little misbehaved children do. We had similar problems in the Bay of Islands and agreed that we would pay a premium to take a childless tour of the glow worm caves.
